The penis is the organ located above the scrotum that is used for urination and sexual intercourse. It is made of three layers of spongy tissue and blood vessels. When aroused blood fills this tissue and the penis becomes erect. The shaft of the penis surrounds the urethra. The head of the penis is covered in foreskin. The foreskin can be circumcised at childbirth or later on in life if desired. Around half of all penises in the United States are circumcised.

The average size of an adult penis is five to seven inches. The size of a soft penis does not correlate with its size when erect. Penises can in many shapes and sizes. If there are concerns about the shape and size, consult your urologist.
